i found this technique that i read the old masters used to use, mostly dutch painters. it’s called the flemish technique i love it, it’s basically what i have been looking for through all my trial and error in painting. i drew a still life, of a munny doll. i found my steps for this technique here. i hope to do a few more still lifes and then portraits.
here is what i have so far, i’m not sure where i want to go with the color. excuse the crappy pics, my scanner is down.
- picture of the munny doll and lighting, i actually drew this from real life then took the pic to go back for reference.
- the drawing of the munny doll.
- burnt umber (mid tone) wash to see values better.
- burnt umber shadows.
- layered washed white highlights added to shadows
- grayscale
- first layer of color phthalocyanine ( i hope i spelled that right) green.
- added a yellow line to see how colors will wash over the grayscale.
- added a wash of deep violet focusing on the darker shadows.
